Rights, Roles and MisconceptionsThe Stereotypical image of an Islam Woman is that of a veiled Woman who is all covered up save for their hands and eyes in what they call the Hijab (the scarf) and Niqab (the face veil), who has no choice but to be completely submissive to the whims of her husband, and is married along with a few more women to just one man. Let us fi rst be clear about these misconceptions about Islam Women and understand the true essence of being a Woman in Islam.Islam, in reality, has a high regard for its women. Islam Women may even have more rights and privileges, and are respected more as compared to those from other religions. To gaze at a woman’s eyes twice may encourage lustful thoughts.Islam does not want its women to be objectified as mere objects of lust and desire. Fixed marriages are allowed in the Islamic traditions. However, it is the decision upon who to marry that is sometimes fixed. But the decision whether or not to marry that man is that of the Woman alone. They have the right to accept or reject a marriage proposal.Islam Women also have the right to a divorce if they she deems their marriage to have failed or if the man fails to live up to the responsibilities that are expected of him especially regarding those that are specified in their marriage contract. The right to a divorce usually has to be specified in the marriage contract with the mutual agreement of both parties. Otherwise, however, the Woman may still pursue a divorce if her marriage has truly failed beyond the couple’s capability to mend it with the help of a court of law.Though Divorce is allowed in Islam, it is somewhat discouraged. They recognize the sanctity of marriage. Their divorce process is not of an instant separation of severing of the marriage but is rather a process of reconciliation. After filing for a divorce, the Woman is first required to stay and not go out of her husband’s house for three months. During this process, the husband will still be responsible for his wife. Its first purpose is to check whether the woman may be expecting a child and the second purpose is to give the couple a chance for reconciliation. Their family and relatives are allowed to help fix the marriage of the couple. Once the couple are reconciled, the divorce is automatically cancelled. But when further problems in their relationship arise, the couple can go through the same divorce process again. When it happens again for a third time, this is the only instance when the divorce can no longer be revoked. They want to prevent separation as much as possible.Men and Women in Islam have equal rights to ask for a divorce. It is a part of the Islam teachings that men and women are equals.   Some grounds for divorce could be as simple as the fact that the woman does not like her husband anymore or if she does not get any sexual satisfaction from him. If some people from other societies would think that it is only men who has the urge and need for sexual satisfaction, this is not the case for Islam. Women have the right to call for a divorce is she does not get sexual satisfa ction from her husband.For a society and religion that can openly express the necessity and importance of sexual intercourse, Islam people still has a high regard for chastity. The idea of chastity can usually be mistaken for the idea of celibacy. Chastity in the context of sex and intercourse means to avoid any unlawful sexual relations while to celibacy is to avoid any kind of sexual relations be it legal or not. One can be chaste without being celibate. Chastity is a matter of great importance to Islam. They impose severe punishments for whoever accuses an Islam woman of unchaste behavior. Just imagine how much more severe the punishment could be if the woman was proven to be unchaste.There have been allegations that Islamic traditions in punishments include female genital cutting particularly for cases of being unchaste. This allegation has been disputed. It has been proven that such practices only exist in only in Africa.In the case of a complete divorce, the woman has the righ t to gain custody of their children for as long as she can provide for them.With regard to what they consider a marrying age, children who are nine years old and younger are not yet allowed to formally marry. They are allowed though to be promised for marriage. And even when they are formally married, young women are still not allowed to live with her husband until she reaches sexual maturity.Islam Women also have the optional privilege of retaining their maiden names even after marriage, something that we would never see in other societies.With regard to Islamic polygamy, the decision of the man to have multiple wives usually needs the consent of the first wife. This is also not a matter of caprice or is a privilege for the men; it is a matter of duty. Polygamy in Islam has a very noble cause. It is the duty of a man to support and sustain the livelihood of his wife, or wives for that matter. A man cannot marry unless he has the means and capacity to do that. He can have as many wi ves as he can as long as he can maintain all their well-being and give them all a good life. Particularly in times of war and poverty when many women are suffering or are widowed, it is the man’s duty to alleviate them from all those hardships by marrying them. Therefore, polygamy for the men of Islam is a matter of heroic altruism and not of sexual selfishness as others might think. This again reflects the high regard of Islam for its Women; they are to be cared for.Since marriage for the Islam is a matter of support and sustenance from the men to the women, this does not entail that women are completely dependent on men. Though she has the right to receive provisions of her needs and more from her husband, she is still also an independent being that can move and interact with her world on her own.An Islam Woman has the right to an education. She can learn what she deems necessary in order for her to contribute to her society and to earn money and a living for herself becaus e she also has the right to earn her own money. She can use that money to purchase whatever she thinks that she needs or wants because she also has the right to have her own property. Moreover, since she has an education, she has the right to work and receive equal rewards for her deeds and services. She also has the right to voice her own opinions and be heard for it.Islam women also have the right to receive an inheritance. In dividing the inheritance to be received however, the men usually receives a larger percent of it. This should not be mistaken as a matter of inequality due to gender. This is again, a matter of duty for the men. It is the responsibility of a man to support his wife (if he has at least one) and his family. He has a bigger financial burden, which is why he is allowed to receive more. Women on the other hand have no duty or responsibility to the financial support of anyone. She has the most important role in an Islamic society as being a wife to her husband and more importantly, as a mother to he children. From what I can tell, the sculptor disapproved of the king’s way of ruling and ridiculed him, but yet he had to create him in stone to be remembered by all. The irony concerning lines 10 and 11 is that Ozymandias will not be remembered as a  great leader and king. What he believed himself to be will not be engraved in his followers, on the contrary, they would probably want him forgotten and his statue left in ruins. A statue is usually a monument erected in honour of a great leader of merit, but Ozymandias was a monument of fear and oppression. The poet is displaying a picture of dry and barren land in the desert. A half sunken body or head decapitated from its legs lying in the sand. There is nothing around these dismantled pieces, nothing for miles. The word â€Å"antique† to me, suggests old, ancient and maybe dilapidated. The poet also uses many words that evidently illustrate brokenness and deterioration like â€Å"trunkless legs†, â€Å"shattered visage†, â€Å"frown†, â€Å"wrinkled lip†, â€Å"cold command†, â€Å"survive†, â€Å"lifeless things†,† despair†, â€Å"nothing beside remains†, â€Å"decay†, â€Å"colossal wreck†, â€Å"boundless and bare† and â€Å"lone†. The suit also claims that women are pushed into â€Å"female† departments and are demoted if they complain about unequal treatment. One plaintiff, a single mother of four, started at Wal-Mart in 1990 at a mere $3. 85 an hour. About one-third of Wal-Mart's employees are part-time, restricting their access to benefits. These low wages complicate employees' ability to obtain essential benefits, such as health care coverage. All in all, Wal-Mart's success has meant downward pressures on wages and benefits, rampant violations of basic workers' ights, and threats to the standard of living in communities across the country. The success of a business need not come at the expense of workers and their families. Such short-sighted profit-making strategies ultimately undermine our economy. The fact of the matter is this, in order for a corporation to grow to the magnitude of Wal-Mart there has to be millions, if not billions of people who continue to shop there and keep putting their money into it. So the next time you are at Wal-Mart you need to ask yourself, is this low price coming at too high of a cost to employees and community members? If the answer is no, then purchase that item, but if the answer is yes go ahead and walk out of the store to shop somewhere else. From your reading of Chapters 1, 2 and 26 of â€Å"Jane Eyre†, as well as any previous knowledge of the novel you might have, write about the links you begin to see between that text and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†. â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in 1892 for a number of specific purposes, including the author’s desire to raise awareness of the condition post-partum depression, from which she suffered, and to illustrate her views on the patriarchal nature and the inequality of Victorian society, particularly with relation to marriage. Perhaps most importantly, Gilman wanted to expose the flaws in the male treatments propositioned for post-partum depression and other similar conditions; treatments from which she herself ailed even more than from her ‘nervous disorder’ when waylaid in bed, much like the narrator of her novella – albeit to a less extreme end. By contrast, Charlotte Bronti ‘s â€Å"Jane Eyre† has no such definite intentions, but acts most prominently as a bildungsroman and a partial autobiography, which leads to a very different treatment of characters as constructs rather than as Gilman’s use of them as representations. While Bronti ‘s characters in â€Å"Jane Eyre† cannot be labelled with much more precision than Mr. Rochester’s standing as a Byronic hero, the characters in â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† are clearly intended for various purposes. The most obvious examples are John, the narrator’s husband, who embodies the Victorian male and the Victorian physician, and the narrator herself, who is intended to represent all of womankind subjected to the aforementioned Victorian male doctor. A commonality between the two novels exists in their inclusion of characters exhibiting madness. There can be drawn many similarities between the two differing presentations, including an obvious physical manifestation of insanity. In â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, as the narrator falls into madness – and particularly at the end of the novel when she has succumbed to it entirely – Gilman depicts her ‘creeping by daylight’ about her room, ‘crawling’ on the floor, ’round and round and round’, after having the narrator herself earlier assert that ‘most women do not creep by daylight’, therefore proleptically implying something abnormal about herself. In â€Å"Jane Eyre†, this same physicality is used by Bronti in her presentation of Bertha Mason Rochester, as she is first introduced to Jane and to the readers ‘on all fours†¦ like some strange wild animal’. Bertha is said to have ‘snatched and growled’, and ‘laid her teeth to [Mr. Rochester’s] neck’, which is an animalistic image also shown by Gilman when she has her narrator say she ‘bit off a little piece’ of her bed. Both authors are in this way very deliberate in creating the metaphor of their insane characters being animals; Bronti refers to Bertha through her narrator Jane as a ‘beast’, a ‘wild animal’ and a ‘clothed hyena’, and besides these more obvious physical links, there are also allusions to hair ‘wild as a mane’, ‘a fierce cry’, an instance in which the woman ‘bellowed’, and her ‘stature almost equalling her husband’, who is built athletically, so this comparison therefore reinforces Bronti ‘s presentation of Bertha as something of a behemoth – her name even bears a visual similarity to the words ‘beast’ or ‘bear’. There are several other parallels discernable between Bronti ‘s Bertha and Gilman’s narrator, for example in â€Å"Jane Eyre† Bertha commits the mortal sin of suicide by jumping out of an upstairs window after burning down the house in her final act of freedom, while in â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, Gilman’s narrator is far more trapped than the character of Bertha, so she can only express a desire to ‘jump out of the window†¦ but the bars are too strong even to try’, and before that Gilman had had her narrator state: ‘I thought seriously of burning the house – to reach the smell’. Both identical actions are used by the two authors to illustrate their characters’ insanity and an implicit breaking down of social norms; and especially a desire for suicide that goes against the core of human nature in our intrinsic survival instinct, which was a deviation seen before in the presentation of the two women as animals rather than human beings. Bertha is referred to by Bronti through Jane Eyre as an ‘it’, solidifying this idea of her insanity rendering her inhuman. However, the marked difference between the protagonist of â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† and one of the antagonists of â€Å"Jane Eyre† is indeed the fact that Bertha has the freedom to carry out her insane thoughts, while Gilman has created in her novella such an image of imprisonment that her own character fails to complete either undertaking. This idea is crucial to Gilman’s message of women’s entrapment in a Victorian patriarchal society, and therefore contributes to the novella’s effectiveness. On the other hand, since â€Å"Jane Eyre† was not written with such a definite intention as â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, the actions of Bertha are designed to contribute to the plot of the novel more than to convey a message about the treatment of women, the mentally insane or the handicapped, though the latter readings could also be taken. A more obvious difference between the two novels is that it is the autodiegetic narrator we can assume to be called Jane of â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† that exhibits insanity, thereby directly demonstrating to the reader the lack of cohesion in her mind, while in â€Å"Jane Eyre† Bertha’s insanity is regarded by the readers through the eyes of Bronti ‘s eponymous narrator. Additionally, while the reader experiences the breakdown of the narrator’s mind from sanity to its loss in the former text, in the latter the only experience given to the reader of Bertha is of her already mentally degraded, with no transformation shown, and little information given about her prior to the exhibition of her allegedly genetic insanity. Bronti emphasises the fact that the reader is not given the whole story of her character Bertha through the interesting manipulation of her narrator. Despite the fact that Jane Eyre is an autodiegetic narrator, the same as that of â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, in the scene in which she is presented with Bertha, and indeed in ensuing scenes featuring Mr. Rochester’s first wife, Jane Eyre becomes more of a homodiegetic narrator – simply conveying the events before her but clearly on the edges of a much deeper story and a more extensive narrative than she has the ability or knowledge to recount.
